AI-enabled crimes are on the rise in the state and the police is facing a huge challenge in tackling them as it has not fully integrated AI into the system, additional director general of police’s Women Safety Wing Shikha Goel said on Saturday.
“When I joined the police force, pickpocketing posed the most daunting challenge as officers had to physically track and then apprehend perpetrators.While pickpocketing persists, it has evolved into AI-driven schemes, resulting in the embezzlement of millions and even billions of rupees,” added Goel.
She was speaking at ‘AI Days 2024’, an AI conference organised by non-profit organisation Swecha, along with other partners, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University.
Speaking on ‘Advent of AI: Opportunities and Challenges for the Telangana Cyber Security’, Goel emphasised that in recent times, most of the cyber crimes are AI-enabled.
“Cyber criminals are using deep fakes, especially to commit automated disinformation attacks, identity thefts, financial frauds, scams and hoaxes, celebrity pornography and even election manipulation. AI-driven crimes have rapid adoption, large scale impact with diverse deployment and it is evolving at lightning speed,” said Goel.
She further expressed that although the department has implemented AI-driven solutions to some extent, there remains a gap that needs to be addressed. Given the magnitude of crimes, there is a pressing need for the department to enhance its speed and efficacy in utilising AI technologies.
