Elon Musk says AI will become smarter than humans by 2029 – India Today

The notion of artificial intelligence (AI) surpassing human intelligence has been a topic of intense speculation and debate among technologists, scientists, and futurists for decades. However, the debate on how AI will replace humans has intensified ever since the launch of ChatGPT, the generative AI chatbot from OpenAI. Because of the introduction of generative AI, now big tech companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, and even Microsoft are currently in a heated race to build their own language models and refine their AI platforms. Considering this rapid advancement, Tesla boss Elon Musk now believes that the timeline for AI becoming more intelligent than humans is not far off. In fact, he claims that AI will surpass the intelligence of the entire human race by the end of 2029.

Musk’s belief follows a recent discussion between podcaster Joe Rogan and renowned futurist Ray Kurzweil, where Kurzweil asserted that AI would achieve human-level intelligence by 2029. Kurzweil has been analysing the exponential growth of technology, particularly in artificial intelligence. Based on his analysis, he predicted that humans are rapidly advancing computational power, algorithmic sophistication, and data processing capabilities. And hence, he believes these advancements will inevitably make AI systems match and eventually surpass human intelligence.

Kurzweil says that people may expect it to take another 100 years for AI to become smarter than humans, but he believes AI could reach this milestone even sooner, possibly within the next five years –– a prediction very similar to Elon Musk’s. Interestingly, Kurzweil predicted this advancement of AI as far back as 1999.

“We’re not quite there, but we will be there, and by 2029 it will match any person,” Kurzweil says in the podcast. “I’m actually considered conservative. People think that will happen next year or the year after. I actually said that in 1999. I said we would match any person by 2029. So for 30 years, people thought that was totally crazy…In fact, Stanford had a conference that invited several hundred people from around the world to talk about my prediction, and people thought that this would happen, but not by 2029. They thought it would take 100 years.”

Reacting to Kurzweil’s prediction, Musk, who has often been outspoken about the potential risks posed by AI, emphasised that AI becoming more intelligent than human beings is much sooner, possibly by next year. By 2029, Musk suggested that AI could not only match but potentially exceed the collective intelligence of all humans combined. “AI will probably be smarter than any single human next year. By 2029, AI will probably be smarter than all humans combined,” Musk wrote in his post on Twitter (now X).

Now, whether AI surpasses human intelligence by 2029, as Kurzweil predicts, or sooner, as Musk suggests, one thing remains certain: the development of AI is on a fast track. This rapid advancement presents both exciting opportunities and significant challenges. Experts believe humans must prepare to harness the power of AI for good while simultaneously mitigating potential risks and ensuring that AI development remains ethical and beneficial to humanity. The coming years will definitely be pivotal in shaping the future of AI and its impact on our world.
