While Artificial Intelligence (AI) as we know it has been around for decades, it only became an international phenomenon in November of 2022 with the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI, making generative AI widely accessible to the general public. Now, educators must balance the expectations of students who want to learn more about AI and its practical applications with its possible effects on student cognition, but what are those effects of AI on student cognition? Is there a way to leverage it to be useful in the classroom? While in many ways it has been vilified in the media, AI does have a place in the classroom if we are careful and intentional with how we are incorporating it.
