Apple is expected to announce new 11-inch and 13-inch models of the iPad Pro with an OLED display in the first half of next year. The new models will boast a redesigned chassis and will be the first-ever iPads with an OLED screen. However, this is only the beginning of the display technology as the company plans to incorporate it in future Macs. The latest suggests that Apple is expected to launch OLED MacBook Pro models in 2026 to 2027 timeframe with touchscreen capabilities.

Apple rumored to launch OLED MacBook Pro models with touchscreen capabilities

Apple is reportedly bringing OLED display technology to the MacBook Pro models in the coming years, moving away from mini-LED panels. Currently, 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature mini-LED displays, superior to LCDs in color reproduction and better contrast ratios. However, the mini-LED panels are still inferior to the benefits of an OLED display. To top it off, Apple is rumored to bring touchscreen capabilities to the OLED MacBook Pro models as soon as 2026.

The details were shared by @Tech_Reve on X, suggesting that Apple will release OLED MacBook Pro models in 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch sizes with touchscreen display technology. The tipster also indicates that the touchscreen displays will trickle down to the MacBook Air lineup for the 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch models in the future. If the news has heft, this will be a bold move from Apple, as it has refrained from incorporating the technology in the past.

If Apple does plan to launch the OLED MacBook Pro with a touchscreen input method, it will have to make various changes in the macOS UI. This is because some UI elements are too small to be precisely tapped. However, it remains to be seen if the changes will be part of the entire Mac lineup running macOS. Note that these are mere rumors at this stage, as the final word rests with Apple.

According to the tipster, the OLED touchscreen display technology for the MacBook Pro models is being developed by Samsung and LG, named ‘Y-OCTA’ and ‘Touch On Encapsulation’ respectively. The technology being developed will result in a thinner panel with a lower cost of manufacturing and supply. The current OLED display manufacturing technique involves attaching a separate touchscreen layer to the OLED panel.

As mentioned earlier, the OLED MacBook Pro with touchscreen is rumored to be unveiled in 2026 to 2027. Please note that the tipster has not shared the source of his information. We will update the post as soon as further details are available. Does it make sense for Apple to incorporate touchscreen capabilities on the Mac?
