AI Leaders Are Calling for a Slowdown — Is Artificial Intelligence Moving Too Fast?

The race to build increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems is facing a new question: Should the industry slow down long enough to make sure safety measures can keep up?

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, called on AI companies to slow the pace of model development in a new essay published September 12. He argued that AI capabilities are advancing so quickly that safety research and safeguards may not have enough time to catch up.

Amodei is not calling for an end to AI development. Instead, he is proposing what he describes as “pacing the frontier” — continuing technological progress while deliberately creating more time to evaluate increasingly powerful systems. His proposal includes independent safety evaluators, cooperation among AI companies on safety standards, and greater international coordination.

One reason for his concern is the growing ability of AI agents to perform complex tasks with less direct human supervision. Amodei pointed to recent incidents involving AI systems and cybersecurity as evidence that increasingly capable models can create new risks when their behavior is not adequately controlled.

The warning has gained unusual attention because other major technology leaders have expressed similar concerns. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has supported the idea of independent safety evaluations, while Elon Musk has also expressed agreement with the need for greater caution.

The debate is not simply about whether AI is good or bad. AI could accelerate scientific research, improve productivity and create new tools for people and businesses. But the faster these systems become more capable, the more important it becomes to understand what they can do, where they can fail and how humans can remain responsible for their use.

There is also a difficult economic reality. AI companies are competing to build better models, attract investment and gain market share. Asking companies to slow down could create a disadvantage for organizations that choose caution while competitors continue moving rapidly. This makes cooperation and shared safety standards especially important.

From my perspective, the strongest AI strategy is not to stop innovation but to make responsible innovation part of the race itself. Companies should be able to compete on performance and usefulness while also competing on transparency, independent evaluation and safety.

The discussion surrounding Amodei’s proposal shows that AI safety is no longer a side issue reserved for researchers. It is becoming a central question for the entire technology industry. As AI systems become more capable, the challenge will be finding a balance between moving fast enough to capture the benefits of the technology and moving carefully enough to keep people in control.

AI is moving faster than almost any previous technology, but speed alone should not be the measure of success. The real test will be whether the industry can build systems that are powerful, useful and trustworthy at the same time.
