Sam’s Club is switching to using AI to check receipts at the exit – KKCO
(Gray News) – Sam’s Club is rolling out new AI technology to help its customers get in and out of the store quicker.
In a press release Tuesday, the retailer said the new technology was created to tackle a key concern from members – waiting in line for receipt verification at the stores’ exits.
Previously, Sam’s Club shoppers would have to wait in line at the store’s exit to have an employee review their receipt to make sure all items had been paid for.
Members said they want a faster and more convenient shopping experience and consistently said the potentially lengthy wait times at exits, especially during busy periods, was a primary pain point in their shopping experience.
Now, after a shopper checks out, a “combination of computer vision and digital technology deployed in the exit area of the club captures images of carts and verifies payment for all items within a member’s basket.”
Sam’s Club said this change allows members to exit faster and allows employees to refocus their time elsewhere.
The new AI technology has been deployed in more than 120 Sam’s Club locations, or about 20% of its stores.
Sam’s Club plans to deploy the exit technology to all its stores nationwide by the end of 2024.
