The 2016 film “Hidden Figures” introduced moviegoers to the story of three Black women whose computational work was crucial to NASA’s early success in space exploration in the early 1960s. But for decades, the contributions of these “human computers” went largely unrecognized.
Similarly, the contributions of thousands of women who helped advance computing and computer science has been overlooked, as has information about women to use in training artificial intelligence (AI) tools, resulting in biased data sets, said AI expert Dr. Joy Lisi Rankin during opening remarks at a recent AI symposium at Missouri S&T.
