VINCENNES, Ind.(WTHI) – A Vincennes artist has a rare take. He’s encouraging using artificial-intelligence but doing so wisely.

As a demonstration, he used the technology to help illustrate his most recent children’s book.

Fernando Lozano is not the first person to use artificial-intelligence to create art, and he certainly won’t be the last.

As AI has caused extreme controversy across the world, Lozano is finding ways to use it positively.

Lozano’s book is titled “The Many Disguises of Suzie Q.” It’s the story of a little mouse who tries to be different animals and things to fit in. She learns along the way it’s okay to just be herself.

Lozano used AI to create Suzie’s image and different aspects of the story.

He clipped and edited them all together into the images in the final publication. You might even recognize a few hidden gems of his work in the book.

Lozano says AI is meant to be used as a tool, not a replacement for artists.

“The first thing that I see on a painting is the soul of the person: their creativity, their feelings. A computer doesn’t have those things,” said Lozano.

Lozano says the way he sees it, he was able to create images he saw in his head but couldn’t replicate himself.

Lozano hopes that his AI-aided illustrations will inspire readers. He says AI is a tool to be used wisely, similar to other inventions throughout history.

Lozano said, “When the camera came, there was no need anymore for these beautiful portraits, right? Because you could take a photo and that was done. So what the artists did, well, they saw the sun and they saw the colors, and they tried to capture that.”

Lozano is just one of the many artists that will be featured throughout each month at the Open Gallery in Vincennes.

His artwork is the first displayed in the gallery that incorporates AI.

Despite being computer-generated, Lozano says it still took a lot of effort to put these images together.

“You have to do a lot of work. I mean, you have to silhouette it, you have to create a lot of things, you have to create the background, you have to create the mirror, I mean, it’s a lot of work. It’s just like doing painting in a way,” said Lozano.

Lozano’s illustrations will be displayed in the Open Gallery until the end of June.
